Iniziata a costruire nel 1860, per incarico di Donna Carmela Zerbi nell’omonimo quartiere di Radicena, dopo il crollo di una precedente chiesetta avvenuto con il terremoto del 1783.
L’esecutore della costruzione fu Mastro Giuseppe Amato “architetto falegname”, che si servì dell’opera di Mastro Francesco Epifanio da Tropea.
Il culto venne autorizzato nel 1863. La Chiesa ha pianta a croce greca e forme rinascimentali, l’altare maggiore in marmo con la grande statua di San Nicola e lo stemma della famiglia sottostante.
Due altari minori laterali, dedicati a San Luigi ed alla Madonna della Catena.
La cupola ad otto spicchi poggia su finte colonne, quattro finestroni danno luce all’interno.
Vi sono due lastre di marmo di cui una al centro del pavimento dedicate alla famiglia committente. La stessa famiglia mantenne la Chiesa aperta al culto domenicale fino al 1990, ne restaurò il tetto ma rinviò il restauro degli interni non avendo avuto più l’autorizzazione al culto, salvo che per gli eredi.
Church of Saint Nicholas
The building of the Church of Saint Nicholas began in 1860, commissioned by Donna Carmela Zerbi in the Radicena district, following the collapse of a previous small church destroyed by the 1783 earthquake.
The builder was Master Giuseppe Amato, a “carpenter-architect,” assisted by Master Francesco Epifanio from Tropea.
Worship was authorized in 1863. The church has a Greek cross plan and Renaissance-style forms, with the main marble altar featured by a large statue of Saint Nicholas and the family coat of arms below.
Two smaller lateral altars are dedicated to Saint Louis and to Our Lady of the Chain.
The eight-section dome rests on false columns, and four large windows which give light to the inner surface.
Two marble slabs are preserved, one in the center of the floor, dedicated to the commissioning family. The same family maintained the church open for Sunday worship until 1990; they restored the roof but postponed the restoration of the inner surface, no longer having authorization for public worship, except for family descendants.
