La Chiesa Matrice di Taurianova, dedicata a Maria SS. delle Grazie, è stata edificata a partire dal 1922, su progetto dell’Architetto Vittorio Peron, sul sito che ospitava quella distrutta in parte dal sisma del 1908 e poi abbattuta per ricostruirla interamente.
La costruzione fu completata e inaugurata il 5 ottobre 1929 e, oggi, domina Piazza Macrì con la sua monumentale facciata tripartita.
In pianta, la chiesa si sviluppa longitudinalmente su tre navate di altezza diversa, che si concludono, rispettivamente, nell’abside centrale, in quella laterale sinistra con l’altare del Sacro Cuore di Gesù e nella sacrestia a destra.
All’interno, capitelli compositi, trifore cieche, colonne e mensole scandiscono lo spazio, mentre la cantoria si affaccia dalla tribuna sostenuta da colonne.
L’area presbiteriale rialzata introduce al mosaico absidale raffigurante Cristo risorto, che sovrasta l’altare maggiore in marmi policromi, mentre nella parte sottostante due ampi mosaici rappresentano i miracoli del 1894, quando la Madonna della Montagna fu vista muovere gli occhi e poi, mentre veniva portata in processione, nel cielo, in mezzo alla luna, apparve una grande croce luminosa.
Sull’altare della chiesa è collocata la statua lignea della Madonna della Montagna, probabilmente opera dello scultore Michele Salerno (1787), alta cm. 130.
La Vergine è seduta, sostiene il Figlio, sulla gamba sinistra, in piedi, il quale con la mano destra a sua volta si mantiene in equilibrio poggiandosi alla veste materna e con la sinistra avvicina al petto un oggetto tondeggiante a forma di cuore.
L’opera si arricchisce con l’angelo che sorregge la croce ed un bue inginocchiato, due riferimenti riconducibili a Polsi.
Nel 1994, centenario dei “Miracoli”, la Madonna della Montagna è stata incoronata regina di Taurianova.
Nell’anno giubilare mariano 2024 è stata adornata con uno Stellario.
La Festa patronale si celebra nei giorni 7, 8 e 9 Settembre.

Church of Maria Santissima delle Grazie
The Mother Church of Taurianova, dedicated to Maria SS. delle Grazie, was built starting in 1922, designed by architect Vittorio Peron, on the site of the previous church, which had been partially destroyed by the 1908 earthquake and later demolished to allow for its complete reconstruction.
The construction was completed and inaugurated on October 5, 1929, and today it dominates Piazza Macrì with its monumental tripartite façade.
The church has a longitudinal plan with three naves of different heights, terminating respectively in the central apse, the left-hand apse containing the altar of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the right-hand sacristy.
Inside, composite capitals, blind trifora windows, columns, and brackets articulate the space, while the organ loft overlooks the nave from a gallery supported by columns.
The raised presbytery area leads to the apsidal mosaic depicting the Risen Christ above the main altar in polychrome marble. Below it, two large mosaics represent the miraculous events of 1894, when the Madonna of the Mountain was seen moving her eyes, and later, during the procession, a great luminous cross appeared in the sky, within the moon.
On the main altar stands a wooden statue of the Madonna of the Mountain, probably the work of sculptor Michele Salerno (1787), 130 cm high.
The Virgin is seated, supporting the standing Child on her left knee; He steadies Himself by grasping His Mother’s robe with His right hand and holds a heart-shaped object to His chest with His left.
The work is enriched by the presence of an angel holding the cross and a kneeling ox—both references to the Sanctuary of Polsi.
In 1994, on the centenary of the “Miracles,” the Madonna of the Mountain was crowned Queen of Taurianova. In the Marian Jubilee Year 2024, she was adorned with a Stellario (starry crown).
The patronal feast is celebrated on September 7th, 8th, and 9th.
